Steinhúsið Guesthouse & Hotel Apartments in Hólmavík

Steinhúsið is the first concrete built house in the village Hólmavík in Strandir. It was built in 1911 and has now been restored, close to its old state, as a jewel in this small fishing village in the Westfjords of Iceland. The house has three apartments, all with a separate entrance. The main building is a beautiful and homy guesthouse with a nice ocean view. The two smaller apartments are fully equipped two rooms apartments with a made up double bed. All the apartments have modern convenience as TV and a free wireless internet connection.

The house is divided into the main structure built in 1911 and an add-on built in 1928. The main building, which is the guesthouse, has five bedrooms and a small rest room on the upper floor. Two large living rooms, a spacious bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen on the lower floor. The add-on building has two cozy two rooms apartments with a good cooking facility. The upper one has also a double bed and a shower. The lower one, which is in the basement, has a double bed and a crib, a bathtub and a comfortable sofa bed in the living room.

Steinhúsið is a part of the old town in Hólmavík, close to the harbour. In the same street is a popular museum, a coffeehouse, a restaurant and a bar and a local artist workshop. The main building of Steinhúsið is also possible to rent as five bedrooms apartment for a big family or a group of friends. The two smaller apartments are just perfect for couples who'd like to stay in a comfortable and romantic environment. Our reception is situated at the Guesthouse Borgabraut 4. A good breakfast buffet is served for our guests between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. at the Guesthouse Borgabraut 4.

Things to do in Hólmavík and nearby area Image

while staying at Steinhúsið Guesthouse & Hotel Apartments:

Just across the street is the popular Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft. At this museum people learn about those involved in the witch-hunt at the 16th century in Iceland. That is the prosecutors, the prosecuted and their alleged crimes. There is also the coffeehouse Kaffi Galdur which serves the delicious Icelandic meat soup for lunch.

Hafþór´s Workshop comes next in the street. From Icelandic birch wood Hafþór makes beautiful small birds "all the Icelandic birds". Then we cross the street again and find in the oldest house in the village the cozy restaurant Café Riis. The house was built in 1897 by the Norwegian merchant R.P. Riis.

The outdoor swimming pool and the hot tubs in Hólmavík are new and are located a few steps away from the camping site. Close by is the cute little coffeehouse Hólmakaffi with a great view over the fjord Steingrímsfjörður.

Experience an exciting deep sea fishing in the fjord Steingrímsfjörður or take a boat trip from the nearby fishing village Drangsnes to the small island Grímsey. The island is said to be home to the largest colony of puffins in the world on a single island.

Discover the beautiful valleys, mountains and a fantastic view around Hólmavík with Strandahestar while riding the unique Icelandic horse. We highly recommend the circle around lake Þiðriksvallavatn in the valley Þiðriksvalladalur. Þverá dam was build there in 1953 with the outflow point of the lake.

The rough beauty of Kaldalón glacial lagoon is worth exploring. Only one hour drive from Hólmavík to Kaldalón, which is a small fjord in the large Ísafjaðardjúp bay. A tongue of the glacier Drangajökull flows down into the valley at its end and the glacial river Mórilla is its discharge.

Take a lovely day trip to Árneshreppur. This beautiful country side has the smallest municipality in Iceland. There you should take a look at the old herring factory in Djúpavík and dip in the outdoor swimming pool in Krossnes. The swimming pool is situated on the rocky beach and warmed-up by a nearby geothermal spring.
